Good stuff. I read an account about the A road logic about once a year and then subsequently forget how it worked. Framing it in terms of my local area (Barnet, Borehamwood, Elstree) has helped me remember, I think.
I’m from Borehamwood myself and I think my interest in this subject comes from the mix of numbers seen nowhere else. Barnet Lane is the A411. Allum Lane-Shenley Road-Elstree Way runs parallel but a mile or so north and was the B5378. Both connected the A5 with the A1. Borehamwood sat majestically in the midst of all these numbers
