Love this! Amazing the changes I’ve seen since 1988, the whole area to the east of St Benet’s Chapel and the QMC Physics building is completely different. Nice to see Silvermans still there, but now on opposite side of Harford St, actually on Mile End Road. It used to be in an older building behind the Bancroft Arms, a pub I strangely never went in, even though it’s directly opposite the main building (People’s Palace and Queen’s Building). Maybe the beer was cheaper in the Union bar… anyhow, happy days!

Was that the army surplus place (Silvermans)?

Yup, sorry I should have clarified!

It looks like they’re moving again. Not what they used to be though - still a good selection of boots 😉https://www.silvermans.co.uk/collections/sale-items

Obviously those boots were made for walking. And that’s just what they’ll do - over to the new Silverman’s location

I tried to research the rumours that Rutherford did some electron work in a QMUL basement lab. Drew a blank

Yeah me too. Must have been some urban myth/student banter thing.

Interesting piece. I think it's equally fair to say conceptions of where Stepney and Limehouse precisely are have shifted over time, also relating to the naming of stations.

Indeed the Stepney name used to be huge - covering much of what we now call the East End
