Heads up
A commitment to write even more this year
I am very grateful to subscribers of The Underground Map Substack.
This missive is a hitherto very rare Tuesday post. I’m not screaming here against the natural order of things on The Underground Map - let’s call it TUM for brevity and to save my typing fingers. My posts generally arrive in your email boxes on Fridays.
This will remain the case. My free-to-read London history posts will continue to arrive on Friday. Or sometimes Saturday if my Friday has been busy that week. Or I had writer’s block and it’s now Sunday.
Amongst TUM subscribers are my very much-appreciated paid subscribers. If you are a paid subscriber, thanks so much! You have been supporting my work and helping to support this big career change I undertook a few year back. Without you I’d be living on thin gruel rather than pizza.
There will be a change in 2026:
The Friday posts on London history will continue as normal. They will continue to be ‘free-to-air’.
There will be occasional Tuesday posts like this one. Maybe not every week, maybe not laser-focussed on maps, history and stuff. I may drift off-topic on the occasional Tuesday post and sometimes it will be special ‘behind a paywall’ post. The first Tuesday post after this will be a guilty secret and actually needs to be walled off!
But here is my vow and commitment to you.
TUM is not being re-aimed at paying subscribers. Weekend articles will continue as normal. The occasional Tuesday article will be a Brucey Bonus and sometimes for paid subscribers only. I might not write on every Tuesday either.
I will not write paid articles which are free-to-read just until it gets interesting and then cut the post off and say “subscribe to keep reading”. That annoys the bejeepers out of me.
So there you go.
NOTES
Brucey Bonus: You may need to have been alive and watching UK TV in the 1980s to know what this means. If you weren’t, there might next be a Google Search on your horizon.

Agree with you wholeheartedly about No. 2. Love the Brucey Bonus reference.
